We believe in preventive care

Wellness is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being. It can be viewed as a process of achieving full potential. Practicing wellness means we are actively engaged in habits that result in us being healthies, and able to be engaged in the activities we enjoy doing.

Many people who practice wellness seek assistance from professionals for preventive care. We visit dentists, nutritionists, massage therapists, and other professionals to help us achieve our wellness goals.

People don’t often think of visiting a physical therapist for preventive care, but PT’s can offer many benefits for your overall wellness. Let us make sure that your body is working as effectively and efficiently as possible, minimizing or eliminating pain and discomfort.

Back in Step Physical Therapy offers two kinds of Annual PT Exams – our standard physical therapy exam and one specifically created for dancers. No matter which version you choose, you’ll get one-on-one time with our physical therapist, who will then compile the information and create a list of recommendations and areas that need to be addressed. You will then come back for an additional 30-minute session to go over results and, together, you’ll develop your personalized plan.

In addition, we offer Wellness Sessions, where we will create customized programs for maintaining mobility, strength, balance, and more.

Wellness Services

We believe that it’s not only important to work with you in the process of recovering from injury, surgery, or illness, but also to work with you to prevent or reduce future problems.

  • Annual Physical Therapy Exams

A total body assessment, determining areas of improvement before they become a major problem. Assessments will include strength, mobility, balance, and several others.

  • "Pre-hab" Sessions

These sessions aim to get you into the best possible shape when heading into surgery, which will help decrease problems and improve outcomes after surgery.

  • Preventive Treatment Sessions
The goal of these sessions is to teach you how to self-manage items found during your Annual Physical Therapy Exam or prior therapy treatments to keep you in the best shape possible, ensuring good muscle balances, coordination and balance, etc.

Trigger Point Dry Needling

Trigger points are knots of overactive muscle tissue that result from things like injury, repetitive stress, or other dysfunctions. They can become very painful, even referring pain to other areas. These trigger points are treated in a number of ways but one of our favorites is Trigger Point Dry Needling (TPDN).

TPDN uses something similar to an acupuncture needle, but is completely different from acupuncture, both in purpose and feel. We will use solid filament needles that are inserted through the skin and into the muscle in order to release painful myofascial trigger points. This process results in the deepest tissue release and as a result allows for improvements in movement and pain. The process is is called “Dry” Needling since there is no solution injected, as opposed to a hypodermic needle during a flu shot. With TPDN, the effect of the needle within the tissue, as well as the needle itself, are the treatment.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a set of hands-on treatments to decrease pain, improve motion and function, and help you return to your normal activities.

This may include things like soft tissue mobilization (related to massage techniques), joint mobilizations or manipulations, etc. It is used to loosen muscles or other types of tissue in your body to assist in getting your body to move better.

Personalized Exercise Programs

Every exercise program is created for you on an individualized basis to address your specific needs. Our goal is to get you back to the activities you love!

Your program may include exercises that seem very basic at first, but are focusing very specifically on certain muscles. Or, they may include more complex, dynamic exercises related to your work or play. Either way, we’ll create something to get you back on track.

Performing Arts

Back in Step Physical Therapy also specializes in working with performing artists. We treat dancers, figure skaters, gymnasts, and more, whether you’re an amateur or a professional.
